who: Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha (SSS) is a non-governmental voluntary organisation. SSS was set up in 1982 with the objective of upgrading the standard of living of the destitute communities that are socially disadvantaged, politically powerless and economically vulnerable.

aim: the main thrust of SSS’s work is to organise and mobilise poor women, especially sex workers, transvestites, people with disabilities, girls, the aged and ethnic minorities, so that they can plan, control and carry out activities independently of the traditional exploitative quarters which in fact dominate rural Bangladesh.

SSS also aims to lower the rate of girl children domestic abuse & early marriage, and make society more accountable to them. SSS wants to encourage access of girl children to higher education by creating an information base for women’s groups. The organisation guides girls’ and women’s groups in non-violent political action regarding the elimination of child prostitution, child trafficking, and sexual exploitation of children in rural areas.

how: SSS is trying to improve the quality and relevance of education with locally developed educational materials and ensure the schooling of underprivileged girl children by introducing mobile boat schools.

what: Mobile Internet-Educational Units on Boats (MIEUB) are boats equipped with computer equipment. They have been successful in reaching target groups in the remotest parts of Bangladesh via river ways., They have also been very effective in educating farmers on the control of agricultural non-point source pollution and soil & stream bank erosion, sanitary latrine usage, improvement of water quality and health of the aquatic system, protection of bio-diversity, etc.

Usually, MIEUB anchors at riverside courtyards and public places, and arranges evening-night educational programs on large screens. People of different age groups watch the programs standing in their own courtyards. The mobile data feature of the boats allows the rural farmers to get information on commodity and farm input prices, access to internet, and e-mail. The beneficiaries also use the mobile phones of the boats to contact other farm groups.
