intro: at a time when cultural diversity is considered to be one of the spearheads of sustainable development, there is a urgent need to give as many people as possible real access to artistic practices. Art activities and creative teaching methods, in fact, play a major role in reinforcing self-awareness, self-confidence, tolerance and curiosity towards other people, cultures and behaviours.

what: Artventure is a visual art program that provides hands-on experiences for children and teenagers. Organised by the Hand Workshop Art Center (HWAC), this youth program, now in its 21st year, is a good opportunity for students to work directly with a professional artist who will teach new skills and how to make an individual statement. At Artventure, children ages 6 to 16 spend their summer painting, sculpting and creating…

activities: a wide range of workshops is available addressed to different age-groups and interest. For high school juniors and seniors, HWAC has developed a series of courses conceived to help preparing young artists for college, for example:
  • Portfolio Preparation: designed for students who want to concentrate on preparing specific portfolio pieces for college and governor's school admission and scholarship applications;

  • Figuring It Out: an introduction to drawing the human figure;

  • Understanding & Appreciating Art & Design: a brief overview of art history and appreciation.
when & where: courses usually begin in June and end in August. The Hand Workshop Art Center is a comprehensive regional art centre located in the historic Fan District of Richmond, Virginia. It is a place where children and adults take classes ranging from painting, pottery, and photography to welding and jewellery; where people enjoy gallery exhibitions featuring emerging and established local, regional, national, and international artists; where artists teach, exhibit, and find an artistic home.
We mention Artventureas just one example among a wide offering of similar organisations working worldwide. Check online for the one nearest to you. Everybody, even you, can transform your own interests and hobbies into genuine art and personal creativity!
