Against the general growth tendency, the population of HIV/AIDS-ravaged southern Africa is projected to fall by 22% during the next 50 years.
2000–2050:- according to the 2002 UN Revision, the number of excess deaths because of AIDS among the 53 most affected countries is estimated at 46 million and that figure is projected to ascend to 278 million by 2050;
- in the 7 Southern Africa countries where HIV prevalence is above 20%, the population is projected to increase only slightly: from 74 million to 78 million;
- outright reductions in population are projected for Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland.
