Worldwide, the average age of the population is increasing, with a larger percentage of the population aged 65 years or older… 1950-2000- children*:the proportion has declined from 34% to 30%;
- older persons**: the proportion has increased from 8% to 10%.
2000–2050- Globally, the number of older persons will nearly triple: from 606 million to 1.9 billion.
- The proportion of children is projected to drop by 1/3, reaching 20%, whereas the proportion of older persons will likely double.
