Is there a correlation between ecological footprints and economic income/consumption?
In looking at countries in 2000, the answer seems to be YES. This is not surprising given that GDP and energy use tend to be highly correlated, and globally Footprints are dominated by the consumption of fossil fuel.
The factors contributing to a country’s or region’s Ecological Footprint vary in a number of ways:- the very high levels of coal, oil, and natural gas consumption in the wealthier regions of the world heavily influence this global pattern;
- in contrast, nearly half of the footprint in lower income countries is attributable to the utilisation of cropland and pastureland.
global footprint sources| | % | | fossil fuels | 47 | | cropland & pasture | 29 | | forests | 9 | | fisheries | 6 | | built | 5 | nuclear and hydro | 4 |
