The regional shares for arrivals differ somewhat from the shares in the world total…
For example, as the Americas is characterised by comparatively high receipts per arrival, it still holds the 2nd position in receipts world share, while with respect to arrivals the Americas was overtaken by Asia and the Pacific for the 2nd position in 2001.
In 2002…- Europe confirmed its leading position as world top destination: of all international tourists in the world, the majority travel within or to destinations in Europe. Together they generated 400 million arrivals.
- Asia & the Pacific is the 2nd biggest region with 131 million international tourist arrivals.
- Africa received an estimated 29 million international tourist arrivals (4%) and the Middle East 28 million (4%).
