The textile industries of India play a pivotal role in the economy accounting for 30% of India's total export volume… - nearly 20% of the total value addition in India’s manufacturing sector is contributed by the textile industry;
- Indian textile industry contributes about 12% to the world production of textile fibres and yarn including jute. It is the largest jute producer in the world and the 2nd largest producer of silk (after China), 3rd largest producer of cotton and cellulose fibre and the 5th largest producer of synthetic fibres/yarns;
- India and China are the two players of size who cover the entire textile chain - raw material to processing to making garments, in both cotton and manmade fibres;
- cotton yarns account for 70% of the country’s textile exports;
- although China is expected to gain a decisive share in the global apparel market, India could be the 2nd largest supplier of EU and US markets in the post quota era: with India's exports growing by 8 to 10% per year to US$12 to 16 billion by 2008;
- despite strong domestic demand, exports have grown to stand at over US$12 billion, about 27% of India's total exports. The domestic market for the garment industry is estimated to be worth around US$16.2 billion (Rs 750,000 million);
- 2003: India's share in the global textile export market has risen to 3%, up from 1.8%, over the previous 20 years. India’s major market for textile exports has been the EEC and USA.
