Every man, woman and child in the United States ingests about 728 litres of liquid a year. That translates to about 14 litres per week or 2 litres a day…* - about 13% of all beverages consumed are alcoholic;
- of the remaining, non-alcoholic 87%, the most popular continues to be carbonated soft drinks (CDS)**, which account for 28% of the overall total;
- their share is more than twice the next-closest non-alcoholic beverage, bottled water;
- however, CSDs’ share has slipped slightly in the past five years, while bottled water’s has risen by almost half.
Americans drink more soda pop than ever before…- in the past 30 years, soda consumption has almost tripled in the United States;
- in 1999, with less than 5% of the world’s population, the US accounted for 1/3 of total soda consumption: 58 billion litres sold = US$48 billion;
- in 2003, the retail sale of CSDs totalled almost US$64 billion. During the same year, the average American consumed more than 200 litres of soft drinks;
- 50% of all Americans consume soft drinks daily;
- per capita consumption has increased almost 500% over the past five years.
* According to Beverage Marketing Corporation ** CSD: carbonated soft drinks
