China

China, with about 1/5 of the world’s population is the fourth-largest soda consumer…
  • the country is the fastest growing in volume sales among major markets;

  • in 2002, soft drinks sales increased by over 15% compared to 2001;

  • China’s per capita consumption of soft drinks is estimated at 15 litres in 2002. However, it has also been estimated that over 80% is consumed by the urban population;

  • CSDs remain the most consumed soft drinks, with volume of sales reaching 186 billion litres and an estimated market share of 30% (second only to bottled water: 39%);

  • China, showing a one-year gain of 9% (in the CSDs’ sector), rose to a 4.7% share of world volume despite its low per-capita rate;

  • the leading company in the market in 2003 was The Coca-Cola Company. The second-largest player was PepsiCo, Inc., with Jianlibao Beverage Co., Ltd in third place;

  • if Coke consumption in China - which banned the product from Mao’s takeover in 1949 until 1978 - could rise from 7 litres per person to 121 (the average per capita consumption in the Philippines), Coke’s market share would expand by a whopping 40%.*
