In late 2001, a wide range of fair trade organisations agreed on a new international certification mark. This is replacing existing national labels in more than 50% of the countries where fair trade products are sold.
In September 2004, the Fair Trade Labelling Organisation (FLO)* worked with:- 389 certified producer organisations, representing over 800,000 families of farmers and workers, coming from over 48 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America;
- 550 licensees, authorised by FLO to use the fair trade label** on their products for final sale to consumers in 19 countries in Europe, North America, Mexico, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
*Established in 1997, FLO is the worldwide fair trade standard setting and certification organisation. It serves as the umbrella group for 17 national label initiatives, acting under different names like ‘TransFair’, ‘Max Havelaar’ and ‘Fairtrade Mark’.
** FLO Fair trade Standards exist for coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, honey, bananas, fresh fruit and vegetables, dried fruit, fruit juices, rice, wine, nuts and oilseeds, cut flowers, ornamental plants, cotton and sports balls.
