marine habitat

While oceans and coasts provide multibillion dollar benefits to the world economy…
  • less than 0.5% of their surface is protected;

  • the State of the World's Protected Areas Report lists an estimated 4,116 marine protected areas covering about 1.6 million Km2.
At the same time, according to WWF…
  • in Asia alone, oceans and coasts contribute to between 40-60% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP);

  • the value of coral reefs to the world economy is estimated at nearly US$30 billion/year in goods and revenues;

  • the Great Barrier Reef alone generates US$600 million/year.
