budgets

At a regional level, the lowest protected area budgets are found in western and central Africa region*:

region % of global budgets
Africa (Western & Central)3
North Africa & Middle East8
South America11
Africa (Eastern & Southern)29
South Asia37
South-East Asia48
Central America63

Moreover, wide range in budgets is evident in nearly every geographic region. For example…
  • in the Caribbean budgets range from US$73 in Dominican Republic to over US$1 million/km² in St. Lucia;

  • in Europe, from US$199 in Slovak Republic to US$134,507/km² in Malta.
Many factors, such as the lack of government resources, the geographic size of protected areas, and degree of population pressure, are responsible for the relatively low budgets.
