sulphur/Europe

Between 1980 and 2000 emissions from land-based sources in Europe fell by 70% (from 53 to 15 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide a year). But...
  • in Turkey they have doubled!

  • In 2000, within EU-15, Spain was the biggest producer: 1,484,000 tonnes/year (EU-15 sum = 6,067,000 tonnes/year).
A major proportion of emissions come from large combustion plants:
  • end 1990s: the 100 largest individual point sources were responsible for over 40% of the total emissions of sulphur dioxide from land-based sources in Europe. 80 of these 100 sources were power plants – almost all coal-fired.
Emissions from international shipping have increased:
  • in 2000, the annual emissions from international shipping in the seas surrounding Europe – the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the north-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea – amounted to 2.8 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide.
