USA: NOT SINGING IN THE RAIN

Each year the USA discharges into the atmosphere 15 million tons of sulphur dioxide…
70% from power plants burning coal or oil;
30% from smelters and refineries;
...and 20 million tons of nitrogen oxide:
40% from cars, trucks, planes;
30% from power plants;
30% from other industrial sources.
The sulphur and nitrates released into the atmosphere eventually return to the Earth as acid rain.
