Each year the USA discharges into the atmosphere 15 million tons of sulphur dioxide…

bullet 70% from power plants burning coal or oil;

bullet 30% from smelters and refineries;

...and 20 million tons of nitrogen oxide:

bullet 40% from cars, trucks, planes;

bullet 30% from power plants;

bullet 30% from other industrial sources.

The sulphur and nitrates released into the atmosphere eventually return to the Earth as acid rain.
