nitrogen & ammonia
The main sources of emissions of nitrogen oxide are…
  • combustion of coal and oil in power stations,

  • emissions from vehicles.
Manmade emissions are estimated at around 35 million tonnes/year. These emissions are largely due to the combustion of fossil fuels and are concentrated in the industrialised parts of the world.

Ammonia:
  • the largest source of emissions is livestock farming. Ammonia evaporates from manure during storage and when it is spread on fields.

  • 1990: worldwide emissions originating from human activity were estimated to be 43 million tonnes/year.
