nitrogen/Europe
Emissions of nitrogen oxide from land-based sources in Europe…
  • 1990–2000: passed from 23 million tonnes/year to 16 million tonnes/year, a reduction of just over 30%;

  • 2000: within EU-15, UK was the biggest producer with 1,737,000 tons/year (the total EU-15 sum was 9,952,000 tons);

  • in the same year, emissions from international shipping in the waters around Europe amounted to 3.9 million tonnes/year.
In Europe, emissions of nitrogen oxide come from…
  • 50% road traffic;

  • 20% combustion plants;

  • 15% other mobile sources (contracting machinery, etc.).
