Effects of acid rain are sometimes far removed from the source of pollutants…
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide combine with water in the air to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid, causing acid rain, which can fall hundreds or thousands of miles from the source. For example... - the acid rain over southern Scandinavia has its origins in continental Europe and Great Britain;
- 90% of the acid deposition in Sweden & Norway comes from other countries, primarily the UK, Germany and Poland, and international shipping;
- about 50% of the sulphate deposited in Canada is derived from sources in the USA.
