International and regional agreements designed to reduce the emissions that cause acid rain are producing their effect:
  • 1985–1996: sulphur dioxide concentrations in north/central Europe air decreased by 63%;

  • during the 1990s, lakes in most areas showed a 1-6% reduction in sulphate;

  • in Great Britain, emissions of sulphur also decreased by 32% between 1979 and 1993;

  • USA & Canada experienced a 28% decline in sulphur dioxide emissions between 1980 and 1995.

* According to a 1999 study, titled "Regional trends in aquatic recovery from acidification in North America and Europe 1980-1995”, conducted under the auspices of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
