bottom consumers

2.4 billion people don’t have access to modern energy supplies*…
  • they rely on traditional biofuels** to meet the bulk of their energy needs: in some developing countries, traditional biomass accounts for more than 80% of total residential energy consumption;

  • over 100 million women spend hours every day gathering firewood, with extra time spent on cooking with poorly vented stoves. These stoves can have the same adverse health impacts as smoking 2 packs of cigarettes/day.

* These includes include gaseous and liquid fuels, electricity, and more efficient end-use technologies.
** The term ‘traditional bio-fuels’ is usually used to denote locally collected and unprocessed biomass-based fuels, such as crop residues, wood, and animal dung.
