A quick look over energy primary sources worldwide shows that: - In 2001, fossil fuels(1) represented about 80% of the total global primary energy(2) use.
- New renewable energy sources(3) has changed little in recent years and represent slightly more than 2%.
World primary energy use, 2001| source | shares of 10.2 gtoe (4) % | | natural gas | 21.7 | | traditional biomass | 9.3 | | nuclear | 6.9 | | hydro | 2.3 |
(1) Oil, natural gas, and coal.
(2) The energy chain begins with the collection or extraction of primary energy that, in one or several steps, may be converted into energy carriers, or final energy such as electricity or diesel oil that are suitable for end uses.
(3) ‘New renewable energy sources’ include modern uses of biomass and small hydropower, geothermal, wind, solar, and marine energy.
(4) Giga-tonnes of oil-equivalent.
