In 1998, renewable energy sources supplied about 14% of world primary energy consumption1… - biomass accounted for about 80% = 38 exajoules1/year from traditional biomass 2 and 7 exajoules/year from modern biomass;
- large hydropower about 16% = 9 exajoules/year;
- other renewable sources - geothermal, solar, wind, tide energy - accounted for less than 4% = 2 exajoules/year.
1) In other terms: 56 exajoules (EJ). An EJ, or exajoule, is one billion joules, equal to the energy content of about 24 million tonnes of oil.
2) The term ‘traditional bio-fuels’ (also ‘traditional biomass’) is usually used to denote locally collected and unprocessed biomass-based fuels, such as crop residues, wood, and animal dung. They are mostly used in developing countries.
