1971-2000: total renewables supply experienced an annual growth of 2%.

‘New renewables’* recorded a much higher annual growth of 9%:
  • wind experienced the highest increase (+52%/year)

  • followed by solar (+32%/year).
In 2000, the highest regional shares in renewables supply were:
new renewablesAsia69.8%
 OECD24.5%
hydroAsia50%
 Latin America21.0%
biomassOECD32.3%
 Africa23.0%

* ‘New renewable energy sources’ usually include modern uses of biomass, small hydropower, geothermal, wind, solar, and marine energy. In this section, data referring to new renewables exclude modern biomass.
