electricity production

Renewables are the 2nd largest contributor to global electricity production:
  • in 2000, they accounted for 19% of production, after fossil fuels but ahead of nuclear.

  • 92% of the electricity generated from renewables comes from hydropower,

  • 5% from combustible renewables and waste

  • while geothermal, solar and wind accounted for less than 3%.

* Fossil fuels are hydrocarbon fuels or hydrocarbon containing fuels such as petroleum (including natural gas) and coal. With nuclear power, it makes up the category of nuclear-fossil energy.

** ‘Other renewables’ include biomass (modern and traditional), small hydropower, geothermal, wind, solar, and marine energy.
