Japan

In 2001, about 85% of the installed solar photovoltaic capacity was in Germany, Japan and the United States…

In 2000, Japan increased its lead in the solar power market with production of an estimated 128 megawatts. Government policies are the primary cause for this surge:

  • the government expanded subsidies for rooftop solar applications: US$130 million was made available to support 1/3 of the cost of 25,000 new rooftop solar systems;

  • in 2002, more than 40,000 homeownersv added 140 megawatts of PV* installations, thanks to supportive government policies.

* PV: photovoltaic.
