Germany

In Europe, PV* production reached 61 MWs** in 2000: an increase of 52% over 1999…

  • Germany, where the world largest solar power plants are located, also leads the European solar industry thanks to the 100,000 rooftop program launched in late 1998: the program - which includes a 10-year, interest-free loan from the German Federal Bank plus a guaranteed purchase price of €50˘/kilowatt-hour - resulted in 45 MWs of new installations in 2000.

  • On the other side, the US “Million Solar Roofs Initiative” announced in 1997 has not been backed by any significant financial support, as a result failing to ignite a surge in PV installations: in 2000, US solar production only increased slowly, reaching 75 MWs.

* PV: photovoltaic.
** MWs: megawatts.
