future trends

Globally, solar technologies are expected to reduce their costs by some 30 - 50% for each of the next 2 decades as a result of learning and market growth…

…this could result in solar PV prices of 10 - 15 US$ cents/kWh:
  • if the average growth rates of solar PV over the past decade were to continue to 2020, the world would have about 48,000 MW of installed solar PV capacity;

  • recent industry reports have concluded that if the necessary institutional framework is put in place, it is feasible for PVs to meet 26% of global electricity demand by 2040.
Solar Electricity Market in 2020
  • Global Solar Electricity Output: 276 TWh

  • 82 million grid-connected customers worldwide

  • 35 million grid-connected customers in Europe

  • 1 billion off-grid customers worldwide, the vast majority of whom will be in the developing world
