Commitments from major firms to invest in renewable energy over the next few years total at least US$10–15 bn, and clean energy investment worldwide is expected to increase more than eightfold between 2001 and 2010, to over US$80 bn annually:- The five main players in the solar biz are Sharp, Kyocera, BP Solar, Shell Solar, and Astropower.
- In 2001, Sharp built the world’s largest multi-crystal silicon plant in Japan, aiming to produce 200 MW of solar cells by the end of 2002 (20% of the world’s demand).
- BP currently has 20% of the global market share for solar cells and plans to enlarge its solar business to US$1 billion by 2007.
- Shell Solar has production facilities around the world with a total yearly capacity of some 80 MWs in solar cells. Manufacturing facilities are based in the United States, Germany, Japan, India and Portugal. Shell Solar has supplied solar cells and modules with a peak power of over 350 MWs. This represents around 1/5 of total solar power installed worldwide.
