Among the industrialised countries, three countries have shown relatively high shares of modern biomass use: - Finland: 20% of its primary energy demand.
- Sweden: 17% of national energy demand. In this country, biomass is projected to provide 40% of the national energy supply in 2020 largely by extending and improving the use of residues from production forests and wood processing industries.
- Austria: modern biomass accounts for 11% of the national energy supply. Forest residues are used for (district) heating, largely in systems of a relatively small scale.
