Wood energy is the dominant source of energy for over 2 billion people…- The total production of wood in 2000 reached approx. 3,900 million CUM*, of which 2,300 million CUM was used for wood fuels. This means that approximately 60%, of the world's total wood removals from forests and trees outside forest lands are used for energy purposes.
- About 55% of the 4 billion m3 of wood used annually by the world's population is used directly as fuel wood or charcoal to meet daily energy needs for heating and cooking, mainly in developing countries. In addition, large quantities of industrial wood waste are used to generate heat, steam and electric power in developed countries.
- Although wood-fuels account for only 7% of the world’s total energy supply, they are extremely important in some countries. Developing countries consume about 77% of the world’s supply of wood-fuels, which in turn accounts for 15% of their total primary energy consumption.
- At country level, the share of wood-fuels within the total wood consumption ranges from a low of 22% in Malaysia to 98% in countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal and Pakistan. Dependence on wood-fuels is also extremely high in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Haiti and Uganda.
- The remaining 23% is used in developed countries and accounts for only 2% of their total energy consumption.
