During the past decades, the wood energy sector hasn’t ceased to progress:- in 2002, out of the 81 million toe of primary energy that resulted from renewable energy sources more than 50% - 44.06 million toe - came from the wood energy sector. This figure puts the wood energy sector up at the top of the renewable energies list before hydraulic power (small and big size installations = 36%).
- It contributes from 12% to 14% of the electrical consumption of the countries of the European Union. The importance of wood energy varies considerably country by country: for instance, a relatively small amount of wood-fuel is used in UK or Belgium, while in Finland, Sweden and Austria they provide up to 17% of the national energy demand.
- In 2002, primary energy production from wood energy amounted to 44.06 million toe for all of the countries of the European Union: a progression of 2.7% with respect to 2001.
France is the European leader for this sector, with 8.48 million toe produced in 2002, followed by Germany:- Germany has had one of the strongest growth rates in the last few years, going from 4.7 million toe in 1999 up to 8 million in 2002.
