climate change

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), industrialised countries could dispense with 400 power stations if they used the full potential of clean biomass energy from farms and forests.Harnessing biomass sources could:
  • power 100 million homes,

  • provide 15% of the industrialised world's energy needs by 2020 compared with just 1% now,

  • reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide by about 1,000 million tons/year: the equivalent to the combined annual emissions of Canada and Italy.

The potential global contribution of bioenergy has been estimated to be between 95 and 280 EJ in the year 2050*, leading to a potential reduction/avoidance in emissions of between roughly 5% and 25% of projected fossil fuel emissions for the year 2050**
