Electronic equipment use is experiencing unprecedented growth in consumption in Asia and the Pacific. This has made e-waste as an emerging environmental issue in the region:
  • 1995–2000: the number of TV sets/100 people in India and China increased 28% and 17% respectively. During the same period, in developed markets such as the UK and USA, the growth was just 7% and 10% respectively.

  • 1995–2002: the number of PCs/100 people in China jumped a massive 746%, while in the USA, the increase was much smaller at 91%.

  • In 2001, Japan discarded 80,000 tons of old and obsolete computers: this is the weight of 4.5 million desktop computers.

  • 1996–2002: the total number of mobile phone in Asia has increased from nearly 45 million to over 420 million.
