Germany
The Germans are amongst the world’s keenest recyclers, recycling more household waste per inhabitant than any other country in the developed world...

  • as far back as 1990, the Duales System Deutschland (DSD) was set up as a private limited company to organise recycling of packaging materials in Germany;

  • extended-responsibility legislation, enacted in 1991, increased the recycling of packaging in Germany sevenfold in 5 years, reduced per capita consumption of packaging by 13% overall, and revived reusable containers;

  • drink manufacturers are obliged to package no less than 72% of their soft drinks, beer and wine products in environmentally friendly packaging (17% for milk packaging), or face heavy fines. In the first 4 years, the scheme cut packaging by 1 million tonnes;

  • the high targets for recycled soft drinks packaging set by law (glass: 90%; aluminium: 90%; plastic: 80%) have resulted in growth in the share of refillable packaging as a proportion of the total soft drinks market. Today, 75% of beer and soda are offered in refillables;

  • Germany is the European market leader in the consumption of soft drinks.* In 2003, German manufacturers of alcohol-free drinks sold 23.4 billion litres of liquid, 4.5% more than the previous year.

* According to the Wirtschaftsvereinigung Alkoholfreie Getränke, Germany.
