aluminium

There are tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits to recycling aluminum cans and several countries are strongly encouraging their citizens doing so…

  • in 2001, for the first time, Brazil surpassed Japan in recycling aluminum cans and took the lead in the world ranking with an index of 85%;*

  • in the same year, the Japanese recycling rate was 82.8% (above the government targets of 80% and up 2.2 points compared to 2000); **

  • in the United States, 100.8 billion aluminum cans were produced in 2002, with US$53.8 billion cans recycled. The aluminum industry paid over US$800 million for the used beverage cans. The recycling rate dropped to 53.4%, a level not seen since 1986 (in 1992 – the peack year – the rate was 67.9%). Even so, in 2002 Americans recycled enough aluminum cans to conserve the energy equivalent of over 15 million barrels of oil.

  • in Europe, the aluminium beverage can meets the minimum targets set in the European directive on Packaging and Waste. Sweden (92%) and Switzerland (88%) are the European can recycling champions. The European average is 40%, a 10% increase since 1994;
