alu/ did you know?

Energy impacts of wasted beverage containers are immense…

  • other impacts include impacts from air and water emissions and the environmental costs associated with all environmental impacts. A Tellus Institute study from the 1980s estimated the 'environmental cost impact' of using a ton of virgin aluminum as US$1,933, and the 'environmental cost impact' of using a ton of recycled aluminum as US$313. The difference, US$1,620, is the difference between virgin and secondary materials use;

  • a littered aluminium can will take 300 years to disintegrate;

  • recycling 1 aluminium can saves enough energy to run a 100-Watt bulb for 20 hours; a computer for 3 hours, or a TV for 2 hours;*

  • SAS Airlines collects enough aluminium drink cans from flights in 1 year to make ¾ of the metal needed to build a new McDonnell Douglas MD-90;**

  • each year Americans receive enough money from recycling aluminium cans that every kid in the US could buy 2 movie tickets.
