steel

Steel is one of the world's most recycled products. In fact, steel is 100% recyclable, which means its lifecycle is potentially continuous…
  • every tonne of steel recycled saves 1131 kg of iron ore, 633 kg of coal and 54 kg of limestone;

  • recycled steel allows saving 76% of the energy and 40% of water required to produce steel from row materials;

  • emissions can be reduced by about 30% to air and by between 60-70% to water;

  • for each kilo of tinplated steel recycled, mining waste is reduced by 1.3 kg;

  • it takes around 15 000 steel cans to form 1 tonne of recycled steel.
However, in the UK alone 610,000 tons of steel cans are still landfilled each year, estimated to be worth over €22.5 million (about US$ 27.5)…
  • in UK, 3 out of every 4 cans in supermarkets are steel cans. The UK is the 3rd worst recycler of drinks cans in Europe, recycling just 42% of steel packaging;
