Steel cans recycling has taken root in several countries, with recycling rates topping 80-90% of local governments collecting sorted garbage… - In 2002, Belgium had the highest recycling rate at 93% worldwide, followed by Japan* where recycling rate has continued to rise reaching 86.1%, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria who were all approaching 80%;**
- in South Africa, the steel beverage can has become one of the most popular one-way packaging in the country, with over 3 billion cans – beer, soft drinks, cider, fruit juices and others – consumed every year. In 2002, the recycling rate reached an astonishing 63%;
- in 2003, the average European steel recycling rate was 61%, a 26% increase from the 1999 figure. A significant amount of this growth was in Spain, the UK and Italy;**
- in the United States, the recycling rate for steel cans is about 58.5%. Americans use about 100 million steel cans every day. American-made steel cans contain about 25% recycled steel.
- 44% of the steel cans used in Australia are recycled. It's a good result, but – in 2001 - about 1.2 billion steel cans were still sent to landfill!
