glass

Glass: 5 out of 6 glass bottles are thrown straight into the dustbin…
  • a littered glass bottle will take 1 million years to disintegrate;

  • in industrialised countries, glass packaging makes up about 9% by weight of the average household dustbin but accounts for over 70% by weight of packaging recycled from the total waste stream;

  • glass is 100% recyclable and can be endlessly recycled with no loss in quality;

  • up to 90% of new glass can be made from reclaimed scrap glass, which saves energy and raw materials;

  • to make 1 tonne of glass takes: 0.65 tonnes of sand, 0.05 tonnes of soda ash, and 0.20 tonnes of limestone. It is estimated that for every tonne of recycled glass produced, 1.1 tonnes of virgin material is saved;

  • recycled glass generates 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution.
