EU bans cruel cosmetics

The 2003 amendment to the 1976 EU cosmetics directive foresees...

...the adoption of a Europe-wide ban on the use of animals to test cosmetic products,

and that...

...it will no longer be possible for the ingredients used in cosmetic products to be tested on animals once alternative tests have been validated at the European level, and in any event the final deadline for ending these tests will be in 2009.

The new Directive* also includes:
  • a sale ban from 2009 for 11 of the 14 animal tests,

  • a sale ban from 2013 - 10 years after entry into force - for the further 3 test areas**.

*Directive 2003/15/Ec Of The European Parliament And Of The Council of 27 February 2003 amending Council Directive 76/768/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to cosmetic product.

**Toxicokinetics, reproductive toxicity, repeat dose toxicity.
