Estimated 11.8 million young people were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2001:

  • 7.3 million young women and 4.5 million young men;


  • Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are, in terms of absolute numbers, the most affected regions.

Every day, about 6,000 young people aged 15-24 become HIV infected.
