AIDS
The ILO recently reported that more than 26 million labour force participants are HIV-positive...
  • young people account for fully 1/2 of the 11,000 new infections occurring each day;

  • in total, an estimated 10 million young people were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2003, many of them young women;

  • HIV/AIDS is directly destroying the productive potential of youth themselves and lessening the likelihood of youth to secure decent jobs: one study in Benin found that only 17% of children whose parents had died attended school, compared with 50% of those whose parents were both still living.
