transport footprint

The environmental ‘footprint’ of transport is growing in terms of resource use, energy and urban space as well as emissions and local pollution…
  • transport accounts for about 1/3 of human induced global warming and extreme weather conditions considered ‘a wake up call’ to climate change;

  • according to a study by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the transportation sector will overtake industry as the largest energy user by 2020;

  • the transport sector is responsible for 40% of the CO2 emissions in Europe with the majority coming from road transport;

  • emissions from transport are growing faster than any other sector: greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from all transport are growing at a rate of 2% per year since 1990 (total growth from road + 17% and +12% from air);

  • car traffic takes up valuable space in urban areas. For example, in order to transport 50,000 passengers per hour in the same direction, one could choose a right-of-way measuring 9 metres in width for a metro … or one measuring 35 metres for buses … or 1 measuring 175 metres for cars. Furthermore, parked cars waste even more urban space, especially since they spend 95% of their time parked.
