mobility for all

Globally, vehicle numbers are increasing steadily…
  • in several cities in developing and emerging countries, the growth rate of the privatised motorised vehicle population (automobiles and motorised two-wheel vehicles) can be as high as 15% to 20% per year;

  • China currently has about 15 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. This figure is set to jump to 80 cars per 1,000 inhabitants by 2020;

  • Western Europe and the United States have 500 and 700 cars per 1,000 inhabitants respectively.

…but not all households possess a motor vehicle…
  • even in developed countries, 25% of households do not own a car, and over 50% of city-dwellers have no car at their disposal for travel at certain times of the day. As a result, public transport is needed to ensure that everyone has full access to urban activities.
