Bogotà

Buses are one of the cheapest ways to reduce traffic and air pollution in cities*…
  • in Bogotá (Colombia), the Transmilenio, one of the most successful Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems since Curitiba**, has helped solve the transport problems in an affordable fashion: costs for the whole system came in at around US$ 3.4 million per km;

  • begun in 2000, the TransMilenio has only three lines in place so far, but already carries up to 700,000 passengers every day, peaking at 42,000 per hour during rush hour;

  • Bogotá’s success also relies on complementary sustainable transport policies such as car free days, parks, cycle paths (200 km programmed to link the entire city) and wider pavements. Car free days and regulating access has also reduced energy consumption by 10.3% and traffic by 40%;

  • today, BRT is being taken up in Rouen (France); Nagoya (Japan); Brisbane (Australia) as well as Accra (Ghana), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and other cities.

* According to the International Energy Agency.
** The Brasilian city known for its innovative sustainable urban transport scheme.
