forests

Forests often suffer negative impacts of tourism in the form of deforestation caused by fuel wood collection and land clearing. Did you know that...

  • 1 trekking tourist in Nepal - an area already suffering the effects of deforestation - can use 4 to 5 kilograms of wood per day.

Jamaica is the sad record holder in speed of local deforestation with rates of over 3% per year…

  • most of this is due to the fast growing tourism industry, which is replacing beaches and forests with newly built hotels and roads, and to agriculture expansion: more than 75% of the original forest has been lost!
