Polluted rivers and lakes, together with direct discharges of poorly treated or untreated wastewater, also affect the quality of the seawater into which freshwater drains:
  • EEA (2000) estimated that tourism contributes to 7% of all pollution in the Mediterranean Sea;


  • in Turkey, around 90% of plants and 80% of tourist facilities have no water treatment facilities, only 20% of domestic wastewater is treated and only 6% of total annual solid wastes are disposed of properly (WWF Turkey, 2002);


  • in Italy, 80%of the sewage waters from the 120 largest coastal cities gets dumped into the Mediterranean without ever having been treated.
The Mediterranean’s waters are recycled only through the Straits of Gibraltar… approximately once every 80 years!
