Energy saving is a big issue that calls for both global and individual solutions. There are many things we can do every day to cut down on the energy we use…

While cooking…
  • use energy saving products such as small electric pans or toaster ovens to cook small meals instead of your large stove or oven;

  • use the smallest ring on your cooker whenever you can;

  • don’t overfill thekettle - only boil as much water as you need;

  • open the oven door to peek at food inside, and you'll lose 25-75 degrees of heat. It's best to look through the window or wait until the food is almost done before opening the door;

  • if you need to warm up or defrost small amounts of food, use a microwave instead of the stove to save energy. Microwave ovens use around 50% less energy than conventional ovens do.
While conserving…
  • let hot foods cool before putting them in your refrigerator or freezer. Hot foods cause the motor to work longer and harder;

  • remove old items from the refrigerator regularly so you don't waste electricity keeping them cold all the time;

  • if cold air is escaping around the door seal, adjust or replace the seal. To check, close the door on a small paper sheet (like a bill). If it's easy to pull out, cold air is escaping;

  • one of the easiest energy saving tips is to set the temperature in your refrigerator between 2°C and 3°C (35-38°F);

  • keep the temperature on the freezer between -18°C and -15°C (0-5°F);

  • for every minute that the fridge door is open, it will take 3 minutes for it to regain its temperature
While dish-washing…
  • according to researchers, a load of dishes cleaned in a dishwasher uses on average 37% less water than washing dishes by hand! However, this is true only when you run the dishwasher with a full load;

  • turn off the ‘heat dry’ feature of your dishwasher. Then, when the load is finished open the door and let the dishes air-dry;

  • when you wash dishes by hand, fill up one side of the sink with soapy water and the other side with rinse water. Then, let the faucet run as less as possible, just to complete the rinse. Doing the dishes this way (equivalent to a full load of your washing machine) can save enough water for a 5 minute shower!
