who: Twin Oaks is an intentional community in rural central Virginia, made up of around 85 adult members and 15 children. Since the community's beginning in 1967, its way of life has reflected its values of co-operation, sharing, non-violence, equality, and ecology: “We do not have a group religion; our beliefs are diverse. We do not have a central leader; we govern ourselves by a form of democracy with responsibility shared among various managers, planners, and committees. We are self-supporting economically, and partly self-sufficient. We are income-sharing.”
what: the hand woven Envirope™ hammock is made entirely from recycled polyester. Soft white coloured ropes and stainless steel hanging rings and solid white oak stretcher bars enhance this hammock's inviting look; this spacious and elegant hammock combines beauty and durability. The White Oak stretcher bars, solid brass grommets and stainless steel hanging rings are the strongest materials available.
Hammocks are tested up to 450 lbs. with a seating area of 48" x 78" for both the Hemp Cloth Hammock and the Envirope Hammock, and 55" x 78" for the Hemp Rope Hammock.
sustainability features: the Envirope Hammock is not only comfortable and durable, it's designed and built in an environmentally conscious manner. First, the rope is spun by Twin Oaks' worker from 100% post-consumer waste polyester fibre (mostly recycled soda bottles). The resulting Envirope is softer than cotton, but much more durable: it will withstand many years of outdoor use.
The White Oak spreader bars are made from locally cut second growth trees sawed at the worker owned high-efficiency mill and processed in their wood shop. The spreaders are hand finished with natural linseed oil to preserve the natural wood grain. Once all the components are prepared, skilled craftsmen create your hammock by hand using traditional knotless weaving techniques. Hundreds of feet of soft long-lasting synthetic rope go into each hammock. The Envirope Hammock resists rot, mildew and weathering.
