organisation: the World Carfree Network is the hub of the global car-free movement. It promotes alternatives to car dependence and automobile-based planning at the international level and works to reduce human impact on the natural environment while improving the quality of life for all. Worldcarfree.net is a clearinghouse of information from around the world on how to revitalise our towns and cities and create a sustainable future. In addition to serving the car-free movement, the network offers resources for architects, planners, teachers/professors, students, decision-makers and engaged citizens.
product: the World Carfree Network Resource Centre provides books, articles, statistics, videos, posters, stickers and other materials via mail and Internet order. It aims to facilitate the exchange of information and resources in the car-free movement across Europe and beyond. The Centre actively promotes the free use of its resources for local, activist purposes and promotes an anti-copyright policy, except when this may interfere with the policies of individual authors and publishers. Moreover, it features a ‘Freesources’ section that includes some classic works for the use of anti-car campaigners and activists, such as the ‘Activist's Guide to Exploiting the Media’, and others useful publications.
other services: beside its resource centre, the network provides a wide range of information services for all those involved (or simply interested), at different levels, in the world car-free project. Here below a few examples: - the Worldwide Contact Directory: a searchable database of transport campaigning groups worldwide. You can use this to search for resources and contacts in a particular area of interest or part of the world;
- the Towards Carfree Cities conference series. It aims to bring together people from around the world who are promoting practical alternatives to car dependence - walking, cycling and public transport - and the transformation of cities, towns and villages into human-scaled environments rich in public space and community life. The focus is on collaboration and exchange, assisting the practical work of conference participants - whether it be organising car-free days, promoting urban cycling, or building the car-free cities of the future. The next conference will be held in Budapest (Hungary) in July 2005;
- tips for the organisation of a World Carfree Day: the network’s site is a true goldmine for those activists or public administrators interested in take part in World Carfree Day held yearly on September 22nd.
