what do they do for YXC: The youthXchange programme is part of the Local Agenda 21 of the City of Barcelona. The YXC guide in Catalan has been published and coordinated by Environmental Programs Directorate of Barcelona City Council. It has been adapted to the Catalan reality by Ecoinstitut Barcelona in collaboration with the Youth Council of Barcelona, OCUC Catalonian Consumers and Users Organisation and CRIC Centre of Research and information on consumption. The guide has been published in 5.000 copies. latest news on YXC: One of the main working areas on the sustainability is in the educational field. Many of Schools and High Schools of Barcelona are in the 21 Local School Agenda and put in practice and learn on the sustainable consumption. Consuming fair trade or ecological food and contracting social integration companies for the school catering services are activities that day after day are more often in the education centres.
The 21 Local School Agenda belongs to the Local 21 Agenda of Barcelona City where are involved companies, NGO's, and other organisations that have make an Action Plan for minimising their impact and working on sustainable development. During the 2006-2007 school year, 184 centres took part in numerous initiatives and activities. quote: "Now in a globalised context, in which we can buy everyday products made in any corner of the earth and where the footprint of the "developed" word is becoming bigger in the "non developed" word, it is needed to establish links between north and south that facilitate the flow of information for being more conscious of the consequences of our facts"
future plans for youthXchange: We will go on linking the YXC programme with the already existing working lines in the city council.
what else do they do: From Agenda 21 to action: in the Action 21 phase, each of the 362 organisations that signed the Agenda21 will identify a Plan of Action with his contribution to the collective goals of the network of actors. The Barcelona City Council has implemented a supporting plan to promote the implementation of good practices; the plan includes, between others, advisory services, training sessions, action 21 awards, a website and educational materials.
Other field for promoting the sustainable consumption is the everyday working of the Barcelona City Council. The "Sustainable City Council" programme works on getting better the ordinary running of the City Council, because one of our firm believes for progressing in the sustainability of the whole society is lead by example.
